Question:
Why do people answer questions with poetry?

I mean - c'mon. Someone says "tell me what you think of my poem" and you respond with some of your own. What are you accomplishing? Does it make you feel special? Is there no other way you can get people to read your poetry than to include it in answers?

Or are you actually trying to grandstand and say 'hey, my poetry is sooo much better than yours'?

Because I imagine you'd be surprised at how often it's not....

I wrote a poem once and posted it here. It was not a spectacular work and I put up merely to amuse. A few were. Then one person took my theme, put it into their own poetic machine, and spat back at me a work of beauty. It was one of the best answers I have ever received.

I agree, some are just stroking themselves, so what, don't we all do that every now and again? Take it for what it is. But if your question has truly inspired, truly lead to real creation, shouldn't you rejoice?

I personally don't mind if someone responds to my poetry with a poem of their own or even with a continuation my original. I feel like I've inspired them in some way. I've used poetry to answer poetry, but never for the purpose of 'showing someone up'. I write it as an example or because the poem moved me. However, if someone leaves a poem that in no way relates to the posted poem, I do consider that an attempt to show off.

So, what's your hang up? Often I find many very humorous and I have contributed many myself. People can choose to answer as they wish. Now if you would like to petition Yahoo to remove people that answer with poems, feel free. Otherwise do like most of us do, ignore them. I would rather spend my time trying to get more people to write poetry.

Its more often then not for attention. They probably just search for poetry questions and paste their poem everywhere.

Why do people answer questions with poetry?

Is it to show how much that they know...ity?

Rhymes and verses from bombastical terses,

Makes the whole lot sound hay-seed...dip-shitity...

I don't know. I never have before.

I don't know what they would do that for.

Perhaps they are almost drunk on the floor.
