Semper, you already possess a lot of what it takes from heart, built in meter to passion. My only critique of you would be some of your offerings seem as they they were rushed to print where a rested eye and sharp edit pen would make them shine. (I suffer from that same disease!) A book I recently read and have gone back too a number of times is Ted Kooser's 'The Home Repair Manual.' (practical advice for beginning poets). Mr. Kooser is a Poet Laureate. A great read even for an experienced poet.

I have no expertise. I suspect you've stumbled somewhere along the way, and are seeking encouragement. At least that's what I feel.
Would you believe me if I told you that there is no right or wrong with this subject? First, you have to care of which you speak. Second, someone else has to care about the subject also in order for it to be shared.
Many great writers started with an audience of one.
Nelson Mandela, for example.
I know this hasn't helped. Just write from your heart.

You know this already.
I cannot tell you anything you do not already know.
I do not expect to have praise lavished on me for something I do not feel has heart or value. I see a piece of art through different eyes than you do. Sometimes letting others read your work opens it up to your own eyes to what they see.
I have said to much,
I have no words today..

I am borrowing mine, I have heard it before but just heard it again yesterday, Ely made the point,
Write about what you know.
Personally, when I write about some of the worst things that have happened to me, I get more pleasure out of the finished piece than the 'love' themes and even friendship ones.
Just my experience. Poetry is part of you, putting it in words opens you up to all kinds of critiques--some hurtful. Just do it.

I think it all would have to depend on what inspires you. For me, it has to be music, or something I read or see on TV or the internet. I write my poems when I'm in a mood for getting things out that I have kept locked inside for too long. Stories, they are usually inspired by a person or event, and song....well. I ain't no Garth Brooks, hehehe.

Sheesh, i'm bored with all the Nirvana/Kurt Cobain hatred on R&P. As i've got suggested many situations formerly, Nirvana is puffed up with the followers and underrated with the haters......all you haters ought to realize that his band substitute into no longer the worst factor to take place to song as you declare! throughout the time of their best, they have been critically acclaimed! I wager if R&P existed in 1992, all human beings may be raving approximately how super they have been! a lot of you hate them because of the fact they grew to alter into legends after Kurt's death. So what? when I first listened to them, i did no longer get into the band because of the fact of his death, yet because of the song. Who cares if he's lifeless? i might pay attention to Nirvana no count number if Kurt Cobain substitute into lifeless or alive. rattling No, i'm no longer attempting to get all you haters to grew to alter into followers or something, yet you ought to offer the band credit and recognize. GSP: your welcome :) yet your answer substitute into good too!

Since I'm short on talent, I must rely on inspiration from the Lord. I borrow much from the Word; as well as my own personal experience and testimony. (Rev 12:11)
If you've hit a dry spot, and are seeking advice on how to proceed, I hope you won't change your style. You've been a great source of inspiration. I know you don't see me commenting on all of your posts, but they have been MOST encouraging. Thanks for being a blessing.

julia's right. write from your heart. don't dwell on a piece too much. you begin to over think it and get frustrated and change the whole meaning of your thoughts. re-read it two-three times and change little things. poetry is awesome. more people should write! i hope i've helped you!

You must read LOTS of poetry, and study the craft of poetry by reading books about it and then seeing how that applies to the poems you read. You must write and revise, and gradually, you learn... lots of work, but well worth it. Best wishes Semper.

Have something to say worth saying, say it in an interesting, entertaining and enlightening way, and do so in a disciplined way also. For example, rhyme, rhythm, meter, alliteration, etc.
