I've written poetry for about 4 years. Its not that im bored with it i just don't know what else to do with it. Ive written about multiple topics and it just seems like im at a dead end with it. I love it and i don't want to stop writing. I would actually like to go places with it but im not sure how to go about it. Im not very comfortable with sharing it with people i don't know unless its a legit contest of some sort. But i have shared it with friends and family and such. ive thought about making a portfolio of poetry, kind of like an art portfolio. But i don't know if i should or not. If anyone knows of any legit free contests or somewhere i can submit them to for a magazine or something that would be very helpful. I write about a lot of things i think could help people too, on all sorts of topics.

To get past that dead-end feeling, you can help yourself by reading a lot of good published poetry. Read the great poets of the past, and read a wide variety of the poetry being published today. You'll be amazed to discover all the ways that good reading stimulates your imagination and revs up your creativity.

If you're looking for magazines where you can submit your poetry, one excellent source of information is the book "Poet's Market." Your local library might have a copy.

You can also find a lot of information at this site:

Bear in mind that the best magazines receive tons of submissions from experienced writers. So the competition can be pretty fierce. And before you submit to any magazine, you should always read an issue or two to get a feel for the kind of poetry they're interested in.

If you'd rather not stop writing then you probably should continue unless writing keeps you up at night and does not allow you to do anything else but agonize over writing. Sometimes we get bored with stuff because we wind up looking at what we do as an end unto itself. Which is to say we expect a lot to happen and when it does not, we're ready to dump it for something else. My experience is that most people don't embark on writing for very long if all they want to do is have something different to do. Writing is a bit of a calling from the soul. But to know what that is for you, you have to go with it beyond the words and look at your life. If you're just looking for something to do, you can do all kinds of things. You can play cards, build boats out of match sticks, try to think of a name for a brand new sandwich. Sounds ridiculous but that's because there are a lot of things we can do.Some things we can learn to do and keep doing them even if we become bored with doing them. Writing is not one of those things. It will probably demand a little more introspection. More looking inside yourself for self approval. Do some of that for a while and you will know what to do with your work. As far as contest are concerned, you can google poetry contest and find that they are a dime a dozen. I'd be more concerned with finding a place to have your work critiqued. Comments and criticism hurt the worse but they can be the most constructive. Google poetry critiques and try one thing or another. There's no one way for anything including life. There's just the way that you choose. Be adventurous and try something different. You wont be bored with it. Whatever you try might take some getting use to but that's pretty much the case with everything. A portfolio would be a good thing. It gives you some record of what you've written. Allow yourself time to rewrite your material and make changes. Nothing is carved in stone. You can change your mind or find a better way to say what you want to say. See it in writing. Go back and look at what you said. Compare that to what you intended to say. When it comes time for the next step, you'll know what that step is to be, but not before that time comes. Good luck and I know you have a lot to say!
