Where do you put the line number of a line of poetry when quoting a poem/ analysing essay? WHICH ONE IS CORRECT?

1) “Do I annoy you? Really? (2)” Inside the quotations

2) “Do I annoy you? Really?” (2) outside the quotations

Just the number like (2) or (Line 2)????
Five answers:
it's me

In short, you put the line number outside the quotations.

Example:

"Like the beam of a lightless star" (Merwin, Line 5)

Once you have established the numbers lines, it's only necessary to use numbers and the poet's name in subsequent citations.

But if only quoting one line of poetry, the line should be worked in the text.

Example:

"The world is charged with the grandeur of God" (line 7)

The poet is not mentioned because it is specified in the text.

Hope this helped.

You indent the strains of the poem a extra 5 areas than you indented your paragraph. then you positioned citation marks in the previous the 1st word of the 1st line and after the final word of the final line. Then an area under the final line, you write "from (the call of the poem; then on the line the call of the poet. be sure you indent the identify and poet's call extra.

In text referencing requires the following: The reference is made outside the quotations (example 2) and quoted generally as (Line 2), as long as you have previously made reference to the poem in text (depending if it's a primary source or secondary source.). However you need to check with your referencing guide (Such as Harvard, MLA, Oxford etc.)

A primary source is for example the poem you're writing the entire essay about while a secondary source is other reference books you used that discussed the poem.

The references in your bibliography need to quote the poem name as well as book information, as per a normal bibliography, as the user below said.

If you are in university your uni library site should provide information on referencing for the specific style, otherwise google the style. (Check with your teacher on the referencing style if needed.)

You don't site the line number just the quote...

"Quote the Raven Nevermore" Poe, Edgar Allen, The Raven. p.whatever, The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe

For Example
