Question:
In the poem, 'Night of the Scorpion' by Nissim Ezekiel, is the poet's mother dead?

Or is she just relieved that her children were 'spared' the pain and suffering that she has just experienced?

She survived, and the locals thought it would make her stronger in the end.

She was pleased that it hadn't stung her children, as they most probably would have died - she went through the pain for them in a way.

The poem is about the night when a woman (the poet's mother) in a poor village in India is stung by a scorpion. Concerned neighbours pour into her hut to offer advice and help. All sorts of cures are tried by the neighbours, her husband and the local holy man, but time proves to be the best healer - 'After twenty hours / it lost its sting.'.

After her ordeal, the mother is merely thankful that the scorpion stung her and not the children.

I don't know quite what to say, Mr. Joker... It's very melancholy. I hate to admit I can relate to it on many levels also - I found that surprising - things I wouldn't tell most folks. It runs deep, hits hard, and is from the soul. It's good that it's raw - if it were me, I wouldn't clean it up too much. It's supposed to be grungy... until the last verse. Quite strong. Definitely blues material. As JC once said of my poem, "*bangs glass on table* Here, here!"

no the poet's mother is not dead.

the following points support my statement.

1. the villages were happy that the motherr survived.

2. she expressed a sigh of releif hat her children were spared.
