I'm pretty sure is was Lascelles Abercrombie - Lascelles is known for his epic poetry. Kendrew Lascelles is more of a screen writer/actor.

It was Kendrew Lascelles who wrote the poem. He read it in 1970 on The Smothers Brothers television show. He did a video of the work 45 years later. It's on YouTube and a search for "The Box - a poem by Kendrew Lascelles" will get you there. Kendrew - not Lascelles:
