Poetry is not simply the use of hyperbolic and long words. You can certainly write poetry if you are not traditionally educated. Many great poets did not go to university, etc. Of course, you have to be intelligent in the poetic sense. Have an ear for rhythm; a way of seeing your world that is imaginative; not be afraid to express yourself. If you have these traits then you do not need to know long words for your poetry to be good. Think of John Clare for example. A fantastic and highly influential Romantic poet. He had no formal education, went insane and his poetry is absolutely riddled with grammatical and spelling errors.

So, go for it. If you enjoy it then do it. If it's good then it's good, but you certainly don't need long words. And if it's not good poetry? If you still enjoy it, so what? Do it for yourself.

Having (and using) a wide range of vocabulary is quite important in poetry. Not necessarily long or "clever" words but just different words than would normally be used. Imagination is more important however. If you don't know many words then just use original metaphors to convey your idea in a unique way.

You don't need big words or fancy forms. Write what you CAN write, and try to expand your skills from wherever they are at. Nobody is ever done getting better. Show us a poem. :)

You can post your poem on here and ask for comments and criticism (c/c) with the meter...trust me..you will get it..:)..I would try to get the spelling correct..Use spell check..Misspelled words will distract from what you are trying to say..Hey, go for it!!

Actually, I enjoy poems with short words.. Its not about how big the words are, its about how the poem flows..
